Taking art into a new level with Einstar

Art is considered a way of communicating, a way of understanding better ourselves, a way of learning via our creativity; and with the right tools this can be enhanced and taken into a whole new level of creation. New technologies, like 3D scanning, are helping to solve day-to-day issues, being it in a production site, medics or even in an artistic environment.

Ken Coleman is exploring with us this world of creation. With the help of Einstar 3D scanning, he’s putting together real and fictional elements to make these 80’s inspired sci-fi artworks.

    About Ken Coleman

Ken Coleman works as a digital artist for Martins and as a lecturer in game art and design for Clonmel Digital Campus. Once he discovered the handheld 3D scanning devices, he started enjoying the experience and results from it.

Once he discovered the handheld 3D scanning devices, he started enjoying the experience and results from it. Since then, he has been using the 3D scanning technology to scan action figures, people and everyday objects to create different artworks. He mixes digital & traditional tools in his workflow and takes influence from 80s pop culture, nostalgia, fantasy, surrealism with a glimpse of everyday life.

    3D Scanning and designing workflow

In order to scan objects such as armours and toys’ weapons, he combined the Einstar with the turntable from EinScan-SE. Apart from the project itself, the Einstar also allows Ken to scan found, built or handmade objects, add them to his digital library and create new objects in 3D which he can use for making sci-fi scenes.

In this case, he’s also scanning his friend’s portrait to later manipulate it in the modelling software Keyshot for ZBrush and add parts of his action figures creating then the characters for the sci-fi battle scene.

    Scan people

The turntable allows him to scan small objects, while the Einstar helps him to scan large objects such as spaceships, statues and people and create a whole new digital library of parts he can use for his artwork.

“And it's so much fun because it's like kid bashing and customising action figures in the 3D art and digital art space.” – Ken Coleman

    Final thoughts

“So if you already own a turntable device and you get this, then you have everything you need to be able to scan larger objects: castles, spaceships, people to add to your collection of libraries that you can then use in your artwork or on its own. It's great for a fine art sculpture. It's fantastic for somebody who wants to up their game with 3D sculpting and use it as a base for collecting information.” – Ken Coleman
